What is NLP?
NLP stands for Neuro Linguistic Programming and continues to play a huge part in personal and professional development.
In a nutshell it is the methods and techniques applied and / or taught by professional NLP Practitioners and Trainers to others, in order that they can enhance their own brain behaviour.
Neuro
In essence the neuro part of the phrase relates to the brain itself as the word 'neuro' means neurons / nervous system.
Linguistic
The language part of how we communicate with ourselves internally, how we communicate with others externally and all forms of communication including body language and state.
Programming
The way we program ourselves for success, alter negative programs such as limiting beliefs or bad habits and how we improve ourselves and enhance life.
There are so many working models, techniques and strategies that come under the umbrella of NLP but here's a few:
- Your Practitioner will be able to help you identify the unconscious limiting beliefs and then work with you to change them.
- NLP works on conscious and unconscious activity so is easier for your Practitioner to teach the techniques as well as use them to enable you to promote wellbeing and support confidence and excellence.
- Strategy elicitation and implementation allows you to discover in fine detail (using submodality calibration), your own success strategy and then implement those in other areas that have previously been a struggle. Learn more about that here >
- You can learn to manage your states and choose which ones are most useful at any given time.
- Set up anchors for positive resourceful states and learn how to fire those when desired.
- Use techniques to override historical unconscious programs and reprogram for greater energy, more productivity, belief in success and more.
- Boost confidence in areas that previously lacked and dissolve anxiety and procrastination.
- Multiple applications in group scenarios, discover how to communicate effectively and with greater positive influence; with your family, teams, clients and customers.
NLP is a powerful adjunct to any therapeutic session but also as a Coaching tool.
At Enhanced Life Practice, we incorporate NLP in your session and are highly trained and experienced.
NLP offers many advantages as both a philosophy of mind, awareness of how we as humans function and specific techniques that come in to play depending on your needs.
Without diving into a training session, here's some of the ways NLP helps your Practitioner evaluate you right from your first meeting.
NLP As A Listener ...
Your NLP Practitioner, depending on their skill level and experience - we have 20 years as NLP Practitioners, Master Practitioners and Leah is a full NLP Trainer - will be keeping in mind an awareness of the language you use when you explain your current circumstances, the perceived problem and the desired outcome.
Language is a reflection of our current beliefs and commitment level regarding the 'goals' we set for ourselves.
For example when using words such as 'need' or 'should', in context with a goal, it hasn't yet become a goal and your Practitioner will know this from listening carefully.
Also whilst listening, your practitioner will have an awareness of your tonality in using specific words and how you frame your sentences. Listening is a very important part of every session and NLP training helps define specifically what to listen for.
NLP As A Viewer ...
Your NLP Practitioner will be watching your body language and your posture. This too is a form of communication and something that we ourselves are less aware of.
And ... something you may already have heard of - is your eye accessing cue a suggestion of something useful or not?
Eye accessing cues are only useful as part of being aware of everything else you are talking about in the context of the session.
There are some techniques in NLP where recognising the area you focus on, relates to the experience you have about the topic.
For example, if you use a lot of emotion access cues when speaking about a topic, your Practitioner will make a mental note or if useful, reflect this to you.
NLP As A Technique ...
There are too many techniques under the umbrella of NLP to dive into in one page so there'll be additional posts with more specific examples added to this new site in the coming weeks.
For now though, NLP offers a multitude of techniques that can help the Practitioner provide you with a skill set to take away such as State Management, Anchoring, Rapport and so on.
Other techniques include Phobia Cures, Dissolving Anxiety, Retraining the Brain, Developing Success Strategies, Timeline Travel to embed new behaviours in the time and place they are needed and much more.
What Our Clients Say

Allowing brain wizard Leah Butler-Smith into my head.
I won’t go into all the ins and outs of the process – the neuroscience she explained that is behind it is mesmeric - but after more than an hour into our session we were both in my head looking at the grey, miserable f__k who was preventing me from writing; stopping me becoming a published author. He was slumped across the table, his head on his arms. The twat.
Then we went back through my timeline to look for a memory in which the pose was replicated. Ping! There I saw teenage me slumped on my mother’s lap, my head on my arms, moments after she had told me she had lung cancer. My feelings at that time were of vulnerability, doubt and being ‘lost’. And they were rearing their heads again every time I tried to write.
Leah took me and young me to a few other places in my mind and, long story short, we both now feel more positive, safe and reassured - and inspired to achieve our dreams. In the last two weeks I have been more productive with my writing that in the last two decades.
I will have my first book – a compilation of my short stories from over the years – out very soon. And then I will set to work again on my first novel.
But the point of this post wasn’t really to wallow in my own progress. It was to say to anyone who feels the fear or anxiety surface when they try to do the work that letting a professional in to have a look under the hood is the wisest of choices.
Thanks to those who have helped me, and thank you for reading.
PS. Neuroplasticity. Bonkers.

I tried every diet there was but never really believed I could lose weight. Â People said I was 'just like...' my mother and as she struggled with her weight every day of her life, I figured that was me. Â Then I met you and we worked on how I was thinking and built some amazing powerful beliefs into my mind and now I KNOW like I KNOW - I am exactly who I believe I am!

I had a medical diagnosis of Myoclonus (suspected) but also a concern I had a phobia of 'tea cups'. Rather random but with your help I learned it was more a fear of 'holding' something when in the presence of others. The sudden jerking was a bodily trigger brought on by a serious of Traumas you helped me to overcome. I never believed when I came to see you for some confidence boosting for job interviews and a hope we could work on the tea cup thing ... that I'd find myself transformed, without any jerking movements and the confidence to travel the world! Your help has gone above and beyond my expectations and I thankyou always Leah X

Given that my entire career and many years of study, have been focused on healing problems of the mind, I was frustrated that there were no effective treatments for a crippling fear of public speaking. I'm very grateful to have discovered NLP and spoken with confidence at my book launch - thank you for your fantastic support!
